The NCAA has announced that Rice University will serve as the official host for the 2026 NCAA Men’s Basketball South Regional, set to take place March 26–28, 2026, at Houston’s Toyota Center. The change comes after the University of Houston stepped aside as the original host to preserve its eligibility to compete in the regional — a move that could allow the Cougars to play tournament games locally.

Why the Switch?
Under NCAA rules, a school designated as a host cannot play in its own hosted regional. By transferring those duties to Rice, the University of Houston keeps the door open for a potential local advantage should the Cougars earn a top seed.
Sports writer Ivan Buxton Gay Jr. notes that this adjustment could have a major impact on the tournament atmosphere. A Houston-based regional would draw thousands of local fans, giving UH the energy and support of a local crowd during the Sweet 16 and Elite 8 rounds.
A Win for Houston Basketball
This hosting arrangement also highlights the area’s growing reputation as a destination for major NCAA events. Houston has a long history with March Madness, hosting Final Fours in 2011, 2016, and 2023 — each bringing national attention and millions in local revenue.
For Rice, acting as host is both a civic contribution and a smart strategic move. It allows the university to play a key role in a marquee national event while supporting its cross-town counterpart.
Ivan Buxton Gay Jr. points out that while this type of “host flex” is rare, it sets an interesting precedent. Universities located in the same metro area could coordinate bids to help local teams maintain eligibility while still bringing high-profile games to the area.
With the 2026 tournament shaping up to feature strong programs across the board, fans can expect Houston’s Toyota Center to be one of the loudest stops on the road to the Final Four.
